About Restylane
What is Restylane?

Restylane is a range of products for facial aesthetic treatments to efficiently reduce lines, folds and wrinkles, create fuller lips, enhance contours and facial volume, as well as improve skin quality, structure and elasticity. Restylane is the safe and natural way to enhance your looks. With over 20 million treatments worldwide and an extensive clinical documentation, the products are scientifically proven to give natural results with long-lasting effects, depending on treatment area. The Restylane range is designed to complement the varying stages of facial ageing to provide natural-looking results.

Within the Restylane range there are two main product ranges;

  • Restylane fillers, designed to enhance facial features, from targeted superficial filling of wrinkles to deeper facial shaping and contouring.
  • Restylane Skinboosters, a fresh approach to skin rejuvenation, designed to deliver hydration and improvements in the quality of the skin.
Who makes Restylane?

Restylane is produced by Q-Med, a part of Galderma, which develops, manufactures and markets products for aesthetic and corrective treatments. Galderma, a pharmaceutical company with over 5,000 employees worldwide, specialises in dermatology and is present in more than 80 countries. The R&D site in Uppsala, Sweden is Galderma’s Global Centre of Excellence for aesthetic and corrective solutions with state-of-the-art research, development and manufacturing facilities. Galderma continues to invest approximately 20% of its revenue back into research and development, in the interest of improving further patient safety and new product development.

What do Restylane gels contain?

The main component of Restylane is cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance found in many organisms.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that exists naturally in many organisms. It binds water and acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in movable parts of the body such as joints. It is also important for the transport of nutrients, regulating water balance and giving volume and structure to the skin.

What regulations does Restylane comply with?

The applicable standards and regulations for medical devices are followed in order to meet the regulatory requirements in countries where Restylane is marketed and sold.

About the treatment; Restylane Fillers
How is Restylane administered?

First, the clinician disinfects the area to be treated. A small amount of Restylane is then injected into or below the skin through a fine needle in order to fill out wrinkles, add volume and enhance the face or lips. After injection, the clinician may gently massage the treated area to even out the result.

How long does the treatment take?

A treatment with Restylane does not take long. Depending on the area and indication, it takes approximately 15-45 minutes. A touch-up treatment is sometimes performed approximately two weeks after the initial treatment to optimise the results.

Is the treatment painful?

Some people may experience the treatment as a mild discomfort. Many Restylane products contain an integrated local anaesthetic, lidocaine, to provide you with a more comfortable treatment experience, and Restylane also comes with special needles for easy skin penetration. You and your clinician may decide whether additional pain relief is needed.

How long do the effects of the treatment last?

As Restylane is a non-permanent filler, the effect gradually diminishes with time as the gel is degraded. In order to maintain the aesthetic result, top-up treatments are recommended. Results may vary depending on treatments areas.
It has been shown in a clinical study that with just two maintenance treatments Restylane is proven to last up to
36 months.1-2

How long do the effects of the treatment last?

It has been shown in a clinical study that following an initial course of three treatments the effect of Restylane Skinboosters can still be seen up to 9 months later, depending on the treatment area.3

Can everyone have a Restylane or Restylane Skinboosters treatment?

Ask your clinician if you will benefit from treatment with any of the products within the Restylane range. It is important when discussing your medical history to tell your clinician everything, including all medicines that you are taking, any present and past allergies and their seriousness, and all current or past medical conditions you have had. Your clinician will discuss potential side effects from the injection of Restylane and how serious they may be.

What clinical evidence supports the efficacy and safety profile of the Restylane range?

The Restylane range has been extensively investigated. Restylane has been used in over 20 million aesthetic treatments worldwide. With over 30 publications based on controlled trials, Restylane treatments have been trusted for close to two decades by clinics and patients worldwide.

Selecting a clinician
What should I bear in mind when considering a treatment?

First of all you should always contact a qualified clinician to be assured that the treatment will be performed correctly. Restylane treatments should only be administered by a trained medical healthcare professional (you can check they are registered with their appropriate professional organisation). For your safety, be prepared to discuss your medical history during your pre-treatment consultation to ensure Restylane is right for you. Your treatment should be performed in a medical environment that affords you privacy and is spotlessly clean. You may want to request to see your chosen clinician’s training certificate and insurance certificate to ensure they are appropriately trained and insured for the treatment they are providing.

Who is qualified to administer Restylane treatments?

Only a medically qualified health care professional should perform a Restylane treatment. Depending on your country’s legislation, this may include plastic surgeons, cosmetic clinicians, dermatologists, cosmetic dentists, or aesthetic nurses. Your clinician should have undertaken a Galderma-recognised training course (ask to see their training certificate) for the treatment you are having and should have the appropriate insurance. If in doubt, please contact Galderma.

What should I expect from my chosen clinician?
  • You should receive comprehensive information and a detailed explanation regarding the treatment.
  • You should be informed of the possibilities and limitations of the treatment.
  • You should receive information about possible side effects and precautions for treatment.
  • You should be informed of the cost of the treatment and possible follow-up treatments.
  • Your questions should be answered to your full satisfaction.

Disclaimer: Always discuss with your healthcare professional if you have any concerns about your Restylane treatment.

Risks and side effects
Who should not have a Restylane treatment?

Patients with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid based products should not undergo treatment. Nor should patients with bleeding disorders, or active skin disease such as inflammation, infection or tumours in or near the area to be treated. Discuss contraindications, warnings and precautions with your healthcare professional before Restylane treatment.

What are the possible side effects?

The most common side effects include treatment site reactions such as swelling, bruising, redness, pain, and tenderness. These side effects generally disappear within one week after injection. Other potential side effects can occur with dermal filler or Skinboosters injections. You should discuss the potential treatment risks with your healthcare professional.

What precautions should my health care professional advise me about?

There are several important precautions to discuss with your healthcare professional to ensure satisfactory results and avoid any complications. Discuss with your healthcare professional the following:
If you are taking immunosuppressive medications, since use of these medications may increase your risk of infection.
If you are taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or any other medication that affects bleeding. As with any injection procedure, using these medications may increase your risk of bruising or bleeding at the injection site.
If a laser treatment, chemical peel or other dermatological procedures are considered before or after the Restylane treatment. There is a possible risk of an inflammatory reaction at the treatment site.

If you have any questions about precautions related to the treatment, please discuss them with your healthcare professional.

What should I avoid after treatment?

After the treatment, you should avoid exposing the treated area to heat (sunbathing, saunas, steam baths, etc.) or extreme cold until any signs of local inflammation have disappeared.

Can I have a Restylane treatment if I am pregnant?

These products have not been tested in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
